Water Damage Indianapolis: Recovering After Storms

Water Damage Indianapolis: Recovering After Storms

Did You Know

Serious storms can flood even the most prepared basements. Even an inch of water in a basement can be devastating and cause costly water damage Indianapolis.

All it takes is an inch of water to ruin carpet, wall board, or personal belongings. Recovering after such a storm is hard, will take patience, time and investment but it is possible.

Cleaning up after a storm

If you have a lot of water in your basement it is important to not drain it too fast. If you have a foot of standing water in the basement, that water is creating pressure on the outside walls. Most likely there is pressure also on the outside soil pushing back on your foundation wall. Right now with the water in the basement that pressure is equalized. If you drain the basement water too fast it could cause a change in the pressure that the walls crack or in the worst cases collapse. Slow and steady is the best option when draining feet of water from the basement. Most contractors pump out the water with heavy duty pump systems.

Flood water is muddy and contaminated

Flood water from a storm brings in mud and gunk. When the water is either pumped out or recedes, you will most likely be left with a lot of mud in your house. The best way to clean out the mud is with a shovel. Once you have shoveled out most of the mud, you can hose out the rest of the particles.

After the much if removed you will need to disinfect every surface. Flood water often carried disease and bacteria. It is important to clean every surface with a heavy duty cleaner and hot water.

Remove everything that can be removed. Bedding, furniture, rugs can all be salvaged if you dry them out as soon as possible.

Bring in fans and dehumidifiers to dry out everything and pull out any excess moisture in the air. When a home or basement is flooded there is excess moisture in the air and can cause mold growth. Mold spores only take 48 hours to start to grow. That isn’t much time to get your house dried out after a storm flood.

Remove, replace and rebuild

You may want to consider hiring a professional contractor to remove the damaged flooring and wall board in your house. Carpet needs to be removed and replaced. Hardwood floors can be removed and dried. In some cases, the planks can be salvaged if properly dried out. Sheetrock will need to be removed up to the flood line. Cut the sheetrock at the water line and replace the damaged areas. A contractor will be able to help know what will need to be replaced and what can be salvaged. Rebuilding after a flood is a tough part but it can be done with the right help, patience and time.
